I sometimes wonder if this very search to understand my family’s history, the context out of which I emerged, only feeds into this false sense of separateness. Perhaps it only doubles down on this “us vs. them” way of looking at the world, further entrenching the divides between us, based on the lie that we are somehow different from each other because we have this history or you have that one, we speak this language and you speak that one, we follow this set of customs and you follow that set of customs.
